Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

At Crystal Lake Dental, Dr. Hsu uses sedation dentistry to help patients manage their anxiety and fear before and during appointments. With the help of mild medications that calm and relax your body and mind, you can complete any dental procedure with comfort and ease.

Sedation or “sleep” dentistry, is usually safe and effective for patients of all ages, and it allows you to remain relaxed ― yet completely alert ― while you’re receiving care.

Sedation dentistry isn't just a good option for people with anxiety about the dentist’s chair, but also for patients with special needs, children who have a hard time sitting still, or individuals with a strong gag reflex.

What happens during dental sedation?

Dr. Hsu chooses the most appropriate method of sedation based on your needs. Most patients receive either nitrous oxide which you inhale through a mask, or oral sedatives which you take before your appointment.

If you need heavier sedation, Dr. Hsu can administer an IV, which delivers sedation quickly and effectively to your bloodstream.

During sedation, you are still conscious and aware of everything happening during your appointment. You can communicate easily if Dr. Hsu asks you questions. He completes the dental work before the sedation wears off, and you naturally and gradually return to a normal state.

What can I expect after sedation?

For some patients, sedation can cause feelings of grogginess, confusion, or fatigue. Nitrous oxide wears off fairly quickly, but oral or IV sedatives may take longer to leave your system.

You might need a friend or family member to drive you home after your appointment, and you should plan on resting for a few hours until you feel completely normal again.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry provides a comfortable, anxiety-free experience for patients that might otherwise not be able to tolerate a dentist visit. It also allows you to complete several hours of dental work in a single session, without the need for multiple appointments.

Since you’re still awake and alert during sedation dentistry, you can easily communicate with Dr. Hsu and his staff the entire time.
