Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are made of clear, medical-grade plastic. Patients wear them about 22 hours each day, and they gradually shift and straighten teeth.

They're ideal for people with minor crowding and spacing issues, but may not be appropriate if you have extreme bite problems or severely crooked teeth.

The Invisalign system uses 3-D computer imaging to design a unique treatment plan for each patient. The aligners are custom-made to fit over your teeth, and you change your aligners about every one to two weeks until your teeth are in the desired position.

The Invisalign system has been shown to produce results that are just as effective as traditional braces.

What can I expect with treatment?

Invisalign can help resolve many of the same issues that traditional braces typically correct. Dr. Hsu uses Invisalign to correct problems like:

  • Crowding: Teeth that are crooked, misaligned, or turned in the wrong direction.
  • Gaps: Small or large gaps between the teeth, which are a common cosmetic concern and can also cause oral health problems.
  • Bite problems: If you have an overbite, underbite, or a cross bite, Invisalign can help realign your smile.

Each patient has a different treatment plan, but you can expect to wear Invisalign aligners anywhere from about six months to two years.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Most patients opt for Invisalign because it is a way to straighten teeth without permanent braces. Invisalign aligners are almost completely invisible to the naked eye, and you can remove the trays at any time.

Another benefit of Invisalign is that you can maintain a regular brushing and flossing routine. You also don't have to bother with frequent adjustments, painful wire brackets, or stains on your teeth from dental cement.

With Invisalign, you can see your entire treatment plan beforehand. Many patients are inspired by the visual images of how their teeth will look once they are straight. In general, Invisalign is also comfortable, painless, and convenient.
