Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

A denture is a removable appliance that is designed to replace missing teeth and support the surrounding gum tissue.

Dentures are commonly made for people who have lost several or all of their teeth from gum disease or tooth decay. However, some patients with only one or a few missing teeth can benefit from partial dentures.

There are different types of dentures, and each offers unique benefits:

  • Immediate dentures: If you have an urgent need, immediate dentures offer a temporary solution while your permanent dentures are made.
  • Complete dentures:  Once all of your affected teeth are gone, and your gums are healthy, you can wear complete dentures, which replace a complete set of teeth.
  • Partial dentures: If you’ve lost teeth in different areas, partial dentures can fill in the gaps and support the rest of your natural teeth.
  • Overdenture: This type of denture is secured to dental implants, but is still removable.

What happens during my dentures appointment?

Before getting dentures, you start by meeting with Dr. Hsu to complete a full oral health examination, complete with X-rays. He explains which type of dentures are right for you, and maps out a treatment plan that may include several appointments.

Dr. Hsu takes impressions and measurements of your teeth to create your custom dentures. You may need to have a few appointments before the dentures are a complete match and fit your teeth snugly. At your final appointment, he places the dentures and ensures you can talk, chew, and move your mouth naturally.

What can I expect after getting dentures?

After getting dentures, it’s normal to experience some side effects, such as increased saliva flow, discomfort when chewing, or changes in your speech pattern. This is a normal part of the process, and you will get used to your dentures the longer you wear them.

In the same way, you should care for natural teeth, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene habits and to clean your dentures as recommended.
